A newly built road in Bhim Nagar, Rameshwari, has triggered anger after Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) DPC wing quietly replaced the promised cement concrete with interlocking paver blocks. The switch, made in Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ own South-West Nagpur constituency, has left residents fuming over safety and quality concerns.
Their fears are not unfounded. Earlier this month, near Crazy Castle on Ambazari Road, multiple riders skidded and fell due to gaps between paver blocks and adjoining concrete. The issue grew so severe that the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission slammed NMC for negligence.
Locals see Bhim Nagar heading the same way. “If even one block shifts, the whole stretch gets disturbed,” warns shopkeeper Vilas Shende. “With daily traffic, it will be a nightmare.” Already, uneven patches are visible.
NMC argues the presence of two major water pipelines beneath the road makes pavers “flexible” for future repairs. But residents reject this logic. “If the concern was pipelines, why pave the entire road?” asks homemaker Sunita Deshmukh. “We were promised cement, this is betrayal.”
For daily commuters like Ramesh Kale, the danger is personal: “Once monsoon water seeps in, these blocks will sink. Two-wheelers will fall. We’ve seen Ambazari, why repeat it?”
Critics also highlight corruption concerns. “Pavers are quick to lay and easy to bill, but never durable,” says activist Madhukar Jadhav.
In Bhim Nagar, people fear they’ve been handed a ticking time bomb. Unless NMC rethinks, this stretch risks becoming Nagpur’s next accident zone.
