The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, successfully hosted a Hands-On Telescope Making Workshop for over 80 science educators from schools across the city on Saturday 27th September,2025. The event was organized by the Ashlesha Astronomy Club (AAC) VNIT in collaboration with the Lodha Genius Programme, Ashoka University, and technical experts from IUCAA, Pune.
Prof. G. P. Singh, Dean (Faculty Welfare) was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He emphasized the critical need for practical teaching- learning methods and stressed the importance of giving back to society through science education, particularly in astronomy and astrophysics.
The program began with opening remarks by Dr. Vishnu Pratap Singh, Professor In-charge of Ashlesha Astronomy Club of VNIT. The core activity was led by Mr. Tushar Purohit and Mr. Prasad Adekar from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, who guided the teachers in assembling functional refracting telescopes. Mr. Satyam and Ms. Kavya from the Lodha Foundation presented details about the Lodha Genius Programme.
During this program, around 60 telescopes were assembled and handed over to each participating school. The workshop provided teachers with valuable, hands-on skills to launch astronomy initiatives in their own classrooms, highlighting VNIT’s commitment to community and scientific outreach.
