A Maharashtra private school allegedly stopped children from wearing a tilak, after which the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) issued it a notice.
Parents alleged that their children were told to remove tilak, bindi, bangles, rakhi, and sacred threads inside the school, bringing the matter to light.
Some parents claimed that tilak marks were forcefully wiped off and students were warned of punishment if they continued to wear such symbols. A few also alleged that children were physically reprimanded.
Following these complaints, parents approached local representatives, who brought the issue before KDMC’s education department. On Tuesday, the civic body sent a formal notice to the school administration, seeking clarification on the alleged restrictions and disciplinary actions.
According to a media report, officials said the matter would be resolved through dialogue between the school and the parents. “The department acted immediately after receiving the complaints. The issue will be addressed amicably, and there is no need to escalate it further,” a KDMC official stated.
The school management, in its response, denied issuing any such ban. It said it prioritises the safety of students and works to maintain harmony between parents, teachers, and management.
The KDMC is now awaiting the school’s detailed explanation before deciding on further steps.
Following the complaints, local workers of a political party raised the matter with KDMC’s education department.
Acting on the grievance, the department issued a notice to the school administration on Tuesday (September 30), asking for clarification on the reported restrictions and disciplinary actions.
“Immediately after receiving the complaints, the department issued a notice to the school,” an official from KDMC said. “We are confident the matter will be resolved soon. There is no need to escalate the issue. The parents and school management will find an amicable solution.”
“The school has not issued any fatwa,” the management said in its statement.
The controversy has drawn attention in the local community, with both parents and civic officials monitoring the next steps. KDMC has stated that it will review the explanation provided by the school before deciding on further action.
The matter is still under review, with authorities stating that their priority is to address parents’ concerns while ensuring the school’s academic activities proceed without disruption.
