Mumbai. 03 Oct (HS): The Maharashtra Government has decided to rename three airports in Maharashtra. The Navi Mumbai airport will be named as D B Patil Airport, while Pune’s Lohgaon Airport will be Jagatguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj International Airport, and the airport at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar will be called Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Airport.
The names of these three airports were finalised during a meeting held recently. An official announcement will soon be made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Navi Mumbai Airport, which is being developed like London Airport, is being named after D B Patil, who was a popular leader in Raigad and fought for the welfare of the people in Raigad and Navi Mumbai. He was elected a legislator four times and also received the Best Speaker Award of the State Government. He represented the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP). He later entered Shiv Sena and retired from active politics due to old age. Born on January 13, 1926, in Jasai village of Raigad, Dinkar Balu Patil was an active social and political worker. He obtained a law degree from Pune University and worked throughout his life for the rights of the farmers and labourers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to formally rename the Navi Mumbai Airport function.
