Nagpur: In the wake of reports linking child deaths to contaminated cough syrups, the Health Department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has instructed all government and private hospitals in the city to strictly comply with the advisory issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on the rational use of cough syrups for children.
As per official data, 12 children aged up to 16 years are currently undergoing treatment in Nagpur—10 from Madhya Pradesh, one from Maharashtra, and one from Telangana. Of these, six are admitted at Government Medical College (GMC), two at AIIMS, and one each at New Health City, Lata Mangeshkar, Colours, and Getwell hospitals.
Authorities noted that several child deaths were linked to the consumption of contaminated cough syrups, prompting the Centre to issue detailed safety guidelines.
According to the Health Ministry, most cough-related illnesses in children subside naturally without medication. It advises against the use of cough and cold medicines for children below two years of age, and recommends that for children above five, such drugs should only be administered under strict medical supervision. The ministry also urged parents to avoid self-medication and multi-drug combinations, stressing the importance of adequate rest, hydration, and simple home remedies as the preferred approach to care.
