Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) — India’s first fully digital airport, developed at a cost of approximately ₹19,650 crore. The new airport is expected to significantly boost real estate growth, tourism, trade, and green innovation in the region. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was also present at the inauguration.
According to news agency PTI, the airport is designed to eventually handle up to 90 million passengers annually (MPPA) and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo.
Inside the Navi Mumbai International Airport
Smart and automated: NMIA features a fully automated, AI-enabled terminal equipped with advanced conveniences such as pre-booked parking, online baggage drop, and streamlined immigration services.
Architectural elegance: Inspired by the lotus flower, the terminal’s design showcases open spaces, expansive glass façades, and abundant natural lighting, creating a modern and spacious ambiance.
Innovative connectivity: NMIA will be the first airport in India to be connected by Water Taxi.
Sustainability focus: The facility includes dedicated storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), underscoring its commitment to environmentally responsible aviation.
Airline participation: Major airlines such as IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air, among others, have announced plans to operate from NMIA, linking it to key cities across India.
According to a media report, IndiGo will begin operations with 18 daily departures to 15 destinations, eventually expanding to 79 daily departures.
