Rohit Sharma was the centre of attention at the 27th CEAT Cricket Rating Awards — his first public appearance since being replaced as India’s ODI captain. The BCCI, in a press conference led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar last Saturday, officially announced Shubman Gill as the new ODI skipper. Gill’s first challenge as captain will be the three-match series against Australia, beginning October 19.
Rohit, along with Virat Kohli, has been included in the squad, marking their return to international cricket for the first time since India’s Champions Trophy triumph in Dubai in March 2025.
Among other highlights, Sanju Samson outshone Asia Cup sensations Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma to win the Men’s T20I Batter of the Year award, while Varun Chakaravarthy bagged the Men’s T20I Bowler of the Year honour.
In the women’s category, India dominated the awards — Smriti Mandhana was named Women’s Batter of the Year, and Deepti Sharma received the Women’s Bowler of the Year award. Both players were unable to attend the ceremony as the Indian women’s team is currently competing in the Women’s World Cup 2025 on home soil.
