Before the festive season begins, students across Maharashtra will face another important academic challenge — the Proficiency Assessment Test (PAT). The exam, designed to evaluate the learning levels and academic understanding of students, will be held between October 10 and 13.
In Nagpur district alone, around 2.48 lakh students from Classes 2 to 10 in government and aided schools will appear for the PAT. The state education department has instructed all schools to ensure complete participation, making this one of the largest learning assessments conducted this year.
The PAT aims to gauge students’ comprehension and application-based learning skills rather than rote memorization. The test will help teachers identify learning gaps among students and improve the overall quality of classroom education. The assessment will not influence student promotions or grades but will serve as an important diagnostic exercise for schools.
The examination will be conducted in four mediums — Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, and English. Question papers will be distributed in the respective mediums of instruction, and the evaluation will be handled at the school level.
Education officers have been directed to oversee smooth execution of the test, maintain transparency in assessment, and ensure that all school-level reports are submitted on time. The government has also permitted the temporary recruitment of additional teachers where required to manage the test process effectively.
The PAT question papers will include a combination of objective and short-answer questions focused on comprehension, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. The exercise is intended to provide a clear picture of students’ academic progress and to help schools strengthen their teaching methods ahead of future examinations.
