In a bid to improve hygiene standards along India’s national highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out a new citizen-driven initiative that offers commuters a Rs 1,000 reward for reporting unclean toilets at toll plazas. The incentive will be credited directly to the complainant’s FASTag account.
The cleanliness monitoring scheme, open until October 31, 2025, covers all NHAI-managed toll plazas across the country. It aims to ensure better maintenance of public amenities and enhance user satisfaction on the highways.
How to Participate
Commuters can take part by downloading the latest version of the ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile application. They need to upload clear, geo-tagged, and time-stamped photos of unclean toilets located at NHAI toll plazas. Along with the photo, users must provide their name, vehicle registration number (VRN), mobile number, and location details.
Each valid report earns the vehicle a Rs 1,000 FASTag recharge, which cannot be transferred or converted into cash. The reward applies only to toilets constructed or maintained by NHAI, excluding facilities at petrol pumps or dhabas.
Rules and Verification Process
To maintain fairness, each vehicle can receive the reward only once during the scheme period. Similarly, a toilet facility is eligible for just one reward per day, irrespective of the number of complaints. If multiple users report the same toilet on the same day, only the first verified submission will be considered.
All submitted images undergo AI-assisted screening followed by manual verification when necessary. Photos must be original and captured via the app; edited or duplicate entries will be rejected.
Encouraging Public Accountability
The initiative encourages travelers to play an active role in maintaining cleanliness while enabling NHAI to swiftly identify and address hygiene issues at toll plazas. It combines technology, transparency, and citizen participation to uphold sanitation standards on highways.
By rewarding users for their vigilance, NHAI hopes to create a culture of accountability and ensure better upkeep of public facilities. The scheme remains active until October 31, 2025, giving commuters across India ample time to contribute to cleaner and more hygienic highways.
