This year’s Diwali will bring a special celestial occurrence, as devotees will perform Laxmi Pujan—the worship of Goddess Laxmi, symbol of wealth and prosperity—over two consecutive days, Monday, October 20, and Tuesday, October 21. The rare alignment of the Amavasya tithi (new moon phase) allows the festival’s main ritual to be observed on either day with equal spiritual merit.
According to the Hindu Panchang, the Amavasya tithi for the Kartik month begins at 3:44 pm on October 20 and concludes at 5:54 pm on October 21. Traditionally, Laxmi Pujan is held during Pradosh Kaal, the two-hour period following sunset considered most auspicious for worship. The overlap of Amavasya across both evenings gives devotees flexibility to conduct the puja as per convenience and family tradition.
Auspicious Time for Households
For families, October 21 is regarded as the most favourable day for Laxmi Pujan. The Pradosh Kaal falls between 6:10 pm and 8:40 pm, while the Vrishabha Lagna (Taurus ascendant) period—from 6:21 pm to 8:18 pm—is considered ideal for invoking the goddess’s blessings. Performing the puja during this window is believed to ensure year-round prosperity and stability in the household.
Chopda Pujan for Businesses on October 20
For business and trading communities, October 20 presents an auspicious opportunity for Chopda Pujan—the ritual worship of account books and ledgers—to mark the beginning of a prosperous new financial year. As the Amavasya starts shortly after sunset, many commercial establishments are expected to perform this ceremony in the evening.
Laxmi Pujan, celebrated with devotion and joy, signifies the goddess’s arrival into homes and workplaces. According to scriptures, it was on this day that Goddess Laxmi was freed from captivity, and her blessings are invoked for wealth, happiness, and success. Devotees light lamps, chant prayers, and perform rituals with faith, hoping the goddess bestows peace, fortune, and abundance upon their homes.
