Nagpur: Bringing festive cheer with a cleaner touch, CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) has introduced an upgraded version of its eco-friendly “Green Firecrackers” that emit 30–50% fewer pollutants than conventional fireworks.
While CSIR-NEERI’s green crackers have been available for the past few years, this Diwali marks a significant advancement as the institute has further reduced harmful emissions to help maintain better air quality during celebrations.
These environment-friendly fireworks are free from banned chemicals such as barium, arsenic, and mercury, ensuring safer use for both the environment and public health. The initiative also benefits India’s small and medium-scale fireworks industry, which employs nearly 1.5 crore people.
CSIR-NEERI provides scientific formulations and testing reports to registered manufacturers to support the production of these approved firecrackers. However, the institute clarified that it does not issue QR or scanning codes — this responsibility lies with the manufacturers and is verified by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Under its public-private partnership model, the RACE (Raw materials, Compositions, and Emissions) testing facilities in Nagpur and Sivakasi assess the emission levels, chemical composition, and purity of raw materials used in fireworks.
CSIR-NEERI continues to focus its research efforts on achieving even lower emissions and reducing noise levels to within 125 dBA, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable and responsible celebrations.
