Nagpur: The No-Grants Schools Welfare Association has announced that CBSE-affiliated schools in Nagpur will reopen on Monday, defying the Education Department’s recent order extending Diwali holidays till November 1.
The association said that CBSE schools operate strictly according to the rules prescribed by the government and should not be penalised due to pressure from any particular union. It argued that the department’s last-minute decision had caused unnecessary confusion among school administrators and parents.
On October 17, the Deputy Director of Education had issued a circular declaring school holidays from October 18 to 26 for Diwali. However, a revised order later extended the break until November 1, prompting objections from school managements.
Association vice-president Rajabhau Tanksale said the abrupt extension of holidays was unjustified and would disrupt the academic schedule of CBSE institutions. “Schools already accept 87 holidays in a year. Additional closures are permitted only under special circumstances such as natural calamities or emergencies. Extending holidays without valid reason affects syllabus completion and, ultimately, students’ learning,” he said.
Tanksale questioned why such an order was issued only for Nagpur schools when no similar directives were announced elsewhere in the state. He added that the association had informed higher authorities about the issue but had yet to receive a satisfactory response.
“CBSE schools will reopen from Monday. If the department wishes to take action, it is free to do so,” Tanksale stated.
