Nagpur: Following a recent incident where a power bank exploded aboard an IndiGo flight in Delhi, aviation authorities have prohibited passengers from carrying power banks with a capacity of 27,000 mAh or above. The restriction has now been formally implemented at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur, and such devices have been included in the list of items barred from passenger baggage.
The directive was issued through a Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) circular dated November 24, aimed at strengthening in-flight safety measures. According to experts, high-capacity power banks can become hazardous if overcharged, as their battery cells are highly sensitive, increasing the risk of explosion or fire.
Despite being included among prohibited items, many air travellers reportedly remain unaware of the regulation, as information about such restrictions is not always prominently displayed while booking tickets or at airport checkpoints.
Meanwhile, airport officials have reiterated that items like scissors, lighters, or sharp objects must be deposited at the Security Removed Items (SRA) counter during screening. These can be reclaimed later by presenting a boarding pass and Aadhaar card. In cases where passengers are accompanied by relatives, the items may also be collected before boarding, with the necessary permission from security personnel.
