Nagpur: Additional District Collector Pravin Mahire has directed officials to take strict measures against sonography centres found violating the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act. He also instructed the Divisional Revenue Officer and other concerned authorities to carry out surprise inspections to curb illegal sex determination practices in the district.
The directives came during a District Vigilance Committee meeting convened to review the implementation of the PCPNDT Act, 1994 (amended in 2003). The meeting was attended by Dr. Nivrutti Rathod (District Surgeon and Member Secretary), Dr. Rajkumar Gehlot (District Health Officer), Dr. Deepak Selokar (Municipal Medical Health Officer), API Madhuri Gaikwad, and representatives from the Food and Drug Administration and other departments.
Mahire stressed that special focus should be given to centres with high abortion rates, indicating possible violations. He appealed to citizens to report any suspicious activities related to illegal sex determination by calling the toll-free number 1800-233-4475 or visiting www.amchimuli.gov.in.
In addition to PCPNDT enforcement, reviews were conducted under the National Tobacco Control Programme, National Oral Health Programme, and National Fluorosis Control Programme. The police department was asked to ensure action under the COTPA Act, while other departments were instructed to conduct public awareness drives, particularly under the Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign.
Schools have been directed to implement the Pitt and Fisher Programme and organise medical camps to identify and address fluoride-related health issues among students.
