The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has suspended 29 sanitation workers from its Solid Waste Management Department for being absent from duty without authorization. The action was taken under the orders of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari, following repeated complaints about staff absenteeism.
According to officials, the Commissioner had received several reports of workers remaining off duty for extended periods, disrupting cleanliness operations across zones. Acting on his directives, a surprise inspection of attendance registers at all 10 zonal offices was conducted on October 20. Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant personally visited attendance points to verify the presence of workers.
The inspection revealed multiple cases where employees had been continuously absent for 20 days or more without valid permission. Following verification, disciplinary action was initiated, and 29 employees were suspended pending inquiry.
The suspended workers belong to various zones, including Laxminagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli, Nehru Nagar, Gandhi Bagh, Satranjipura, Lakadganj, Ashi Nagar, and Mangalwari, as well as the head office.
Officials said the civic administration has taken a firm stance to ensure accountability among sanitation staff. “Cleanliness is a top priority, and habitual absenteeism will not be tolerated,” a senior NMC officer said.
Dr. Chaudhari has directed all zonal officers and supervisors to maintain strict monitoring of attendance records and to take immediate action in case of irregularities to maintain efficiency in city cleanliness services.
