The Ashiesh NX building, which came under scrutiny after a major fire near Gandhi Gate in Mahal on May 30, has been found to be completely unauthorised, officials from the Municipal Corporation’s Fire Department revealed on Wednesday.
According to officials, the building had not obtained any approvals from either the Fire Department or the Town Planning Department. Investigations showed that the commercial establishment had expanded by merging three separate buildings into a single structure without the required permissions.Addressing a press conference, Fire and Electrical Committee Chairperson Rupali Thakur said the civic body has identified several similar structures across the city and prepared a comprehensive list.
Action against these buildings will be taken in phases, she said, adding that strict measures will be implemented against violators.Fire Officer Tushar Barahate informed that an FIR has been registered against Ashiesh NX. Since the structure was built illegally, provisions of the Fire Act do not technically apply to it. He noted that property owners are required to submit compliance reports twice a year, in January and July, certifying that their fire safety systems are functional. However, the owner of Ashiesh NX never submitted any such application.
Officials also pointed out that preventing the unauthorised use of buildings falls under the responsibility of the Town Planning Department and the concerned Zone Office. Both departments failed to take timely action, allowing the illegal structure to continue operating.
