Mayor Neeta Thakre Announces Year-Long Environmental Campaign; Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to Inaugurate on June 5
Nagpur, June 3: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced an ambitious campaign to plant 5 lakh saplings across the city over the next year through active public participation, Mayor Neeta Thakre informed on Wednesday. The mega initiative will be inaugurated by Nitin Gadkari on June 5, World Environment Day, at Suyog Nagar Garden at 10 a.m.
Addressing a press conference, the Mayor said that NMC will also undertake a citywide Environment Conservation Fortnight Campaign from June 5 to June 21, focusing on cleanliness drives at lakes, rivers, drains, gardens, religious places, markets, transport hubs, tourist attractions and heritage sites.
The campaign is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s environmental initiatives, including the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” movement. While the campaign officially begins on June 5, tree plantation activities will continue throughout the year.
Saplings will be planted in gardens, along river and lake banks, in the city’s outskirts, and across all municipal wards in consultation with corporators.
Preparatory work, including digging pits and soil treatment, has already begun. With support from NMC’s Garden Department and the Social Forestry Department, 5 lakh saplings will be planted during the monsoon season. Officials, employees, corporators, senior citizens, police mitras, mohalla committees and NGOs will be involved to ensure the survival and maintenance of the trees.
Highlighting the need for the initiative, Mayor Thakre said the campaign is essential in view of Nagpur’s rising temperatures and growing environmental concerns.
Alongside tree plantation, NMC will organize special cleanliness drives across the city and collect electronic waste through dedicated campaigns.
