Ensuring the safety of schoolchildren, especially girls, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to install 1,360 CCTV cameras across its 116 municipal schools. The initiative aims to create a safer and more secure learning environment in line with the state government’s directive making CCTV surveillance mandatory in all schools.
Of the 116 schools, 88 are primary and 28 are secondary schools. So far, CCTV systems have already been installed in 34 schools, while work will soon begin in the remaining 82 schools. The new installation plan includes 256 cameras in 36 primary schools, 496 cameras in 46 upper primary schools, and 608 cameras in 34 high schools.
NMC officials said that CCTV cameras are the most effective tool to ensure the security of students, teachers, and non-teaching staff within school premises. The footage from each school will be monitored by the respective headmasters and education officers, while a centralized control room will also be established at the NMC headquarters for citywide surveillance.
This central monitoring system will enable officials to keep real-time watch on school safety measures and respond promptly to any untoward incidents.
According to NMC education department officials, the civic body has made budgetary provisions for this initiative and aims to complete the installation soon. The move marks an important step toward providing students with a safe, protected, and worry-free educational environment, reinforcing the civic body’s commitment to child safety and well-being.
