The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated steps to modernize its property tax assessment system by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect changes in land and building structures across the city. The move aims to ensure fair taxation and increase civic revenue through accurate and real-time property data.
Under a pilot project in the Laxminagar Zone, an AI-based survey was conducted to identify modifications in properties. The survey covered 9,000 properties, of which 2,000 were new and 7,000 showed changes in structure or use. To verify the AI findings, NMC’s Zone No. 1 tax inspectors conducted a door-to-door verification of 380 sample properties. The comparison between on-site data and AI reports revealed 12 new properties and 215 with significant structural changes.
Officials said that if such AI-based monitoring is implemented regularly, it will help capture real-time updates on construction, expansion, and usage changes — leading to timely revision of taxable values and a substantial increase in property tax revenue.
Encouraged by the pilot’s success, the NMC now plans to extend the AI-assisted survey to all ten zones in its jurisdiction. Data collected through this initiative will be verified through field inspections, followed by updated assessments for taxation.
According to NMC officials, factors such as geographical coordinates, property usage, building type, and construction age will be considered while determining taxable value. The corporation expects this digital transition to significantly enhance efficiency, transparency, and municipal income.
