Nagpur: In a move to bolster student security and create safer learning spaces, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated the installation of 1,360 CCTV cameras across its 116 municipal schools. The project aligns with the Maharashtra government’s directive mandating CCTV surveillance in all educational institutions.
Officials said the civic body has already allocated funds for the initiative in its annual budget. Of the total schools, 88 are primary and 28 are secondary. So far, 34 schools have been fitted with surveillance systems, while installation in the remaining 82 schools is expected to be completed soon.
Under the ongoing phase, 36 primary schools will receive 256 cameras, 46 upper-primary schools will be equipped with 496 cameras, and 34 high schools will have 608 cameras installed. The work will be carried out zone-wise in coordination with the Education Department to maintain consistent safety standards across all NMC-run institutions.
Municipal officials emphasized that the initiative responds to increasing concerns about student safety both within and around school premises. “The security of students, teachers, and staff remains our top priority. CCTV surveillance serves as an effective deterrent and monitoring mechanism against any untoward incidents,” an NMC spokesperson stated.
As part of the plan, each school’s headmaster and education officer will be tasked with overseeing and monitoring live camera feeds to ensure prompt action when needed.
