In an unprecedented show of solidarity, doctors across Maharashtra have called for a statewide strike starting November 3, demanding justice for the woman doctor from Phaltan Subdistrict Hospital who died under tragic circumstances over a week ago. Despite the passage of several days, her family has yet to receive justice, prompting coordinated action from major medical associations across the state.
According to a joint statement, candlelight marches will be held on November 2 in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Doctors from multiple organisations will join the demonstrations to express solidarity and demand accountability.
From November 3, members of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), Maharashtra State Resident Doctors Association (MSRDA), and Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI) will boycott outpatient department (OPD) services in all government hospitals and medical colleges. The protest will continue until their demands are met.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government Medical Officers Association (MAGMO), Indian Medical Association (IMA), and Ayurvedic Medical Organisation (AMO) have announced that they will boycott all administrative meetings and video conferences as part of the agitation. If the authorities fail to respond, MAGMO and IMA have warned that they will withdraw inpatient department (IPD) services from November 7 and may shut down emergency services entirely from November 14. In-service doctors pursuing postgraduate studies are also expected to join the strike.
For the first time in Maharashtra’s history, organisations including MARD, MAGMO, IMA, MSRDA, AMO, MSMTA, and ASMI have united for a common state-level protest. Representatives stated that they would not step back until justice is served and their demands are fulfilled.
As part of the ongoing peaceful campaign, MARD doctors on Friday organised a rangoli and digital art awareness drive in hospital premises and public spaces. The initiative aimed to inform citizens—many of whom remain unaware of the incident—and to rally society in demanding justice and preventing such tragedies in the future.
