The Public Works Department (PWD) has defended the crores being spent on the maintenance and renovation of ministers’ bungalows at Ravi Bhavan, Nagpur, saying the expenses are justified and based on actual needs. Nagpur division’s Superintending Engineer Janardan Bhanuse clarified that these government quarters are used not only during the legislative sessions but throughout the year, making regular upkeep necessary.
Reports suggest that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed displeasure over the high expenditure and directed that only essential works be carried out. “The bungalows are over 75 years old. They don’t deteriorate all at once. Each year, only a few need major repairs,” said Bhanuse. He added that this year, three bungalows required new roofs and tiles, while some works were initiated following letters from ministers themselves. On average, ₹12–15 lakh is spent per bungalow annually, depending on the extent of repairs needed.
Raj Bhavan Works Worth ₹10 Crore
Meanwhile, extensive renovation and kitchen upgradation works worth ₹10 crore have been proposed for Raj Bhavan this year. The campus, which includes multiple buildings and five bungalows, will also see repairs to the main structure and construction of new toilets.
Nine Ministers Shifted to Nag Bhavan
Ravi Bhavan has a total of 30 bungalows—six reserved for the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Chairpersons, and Leaders of Opposition of both Houses. With 33 cabinet ministers in the state, accommodation for nine ministers will now be arranged at Nag Bhavan.
