A new international study has found that workplace romances are notably more common in India than in most other countries, placing the country second among 11 nations surveyed. The findings come from a study conducted by Ashley Madison — a platform known for discreet relationships — in partnership with YouGov, covering 13,581 adults across Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US.
According to the report, 40% of Indians surveyed said they have either dated a coworker or are currently involved with one. This places India just behind Mexico, where 43% reported having been in an office romance. In comparison, countries such as the US, UK and Canada recorded lower figures of around 30%.
The data suggests that office relationships remain common in India despite increasing awareness around workplace conduct and professional boundaries. The survey also highlights a gender divide: 51% of men said they had dated a colleague at some point, compared to 36% of women, indicating higher risk-taking among men in workplace relationships.
The study further reveals differing concerns between genders. 29% of women said they avoid office romances due to potential professional repercussions, slightly higher than 27% of men. In contrast, men seemed more worried about personal consequences, with 30% citing it as a deterrent versus 26% of women.
A generational shift was also evident. Younger professionals aged 18–24 were found to be the most cautious, with 34% expressing concern about how office relationships might affect their career growth.
India’s high ranking in workplace romances also aligns with broader trends toward non-traditional relationships. A separate survey by Gleeden, an extramarital dating platform, found that 35% of Indians identify as being in an open relationship, while 41% said they would consider one if suggested by their partner. These trends are not restricted to major cities — smaller towns are showing similar openness, with Kanchipuram topping the list for interest in extramarital affairs.
