In one of the most dramatic player trades in IPL history, Rajasthan Royals (RR) have traded their long-time captain Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), while star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja makes a high-profile return to the Jaipur-based franchise. The deal — approved by the BCCI after brief technical delays — also includes English all-rounder Sam Curran, turning it into a rare three-player exchange just hours before the retention deadline.
How the Three-Way Trade Came Together
Initially discussed as a direct swap between Samson and Jadeja, negotiations expanded when Rajasthan insisted on adding Sam Curran to the trade. While Samson and Jadeja carried identical retention values of ₹18 crore, RR secured Curran at his current league fee of ₹2.4 crore. Samson, too, will join CSK at the same fee he was retained for at RR.
Why Sanju Samson Parted Ways with RR
Samson’s exit, insiders say, was months in the making. Over the past two seasons, he reportedly became increasingly uncomfortable with the team’s strategic decisions. The release of key players such as Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravichandran Ashwin signaled a rebuilding phase that Samson did not fully endorse.
There were also internal disagreements regarding his batting role. Samson preferred to open, but the success of the young opening pair Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi — especially after Samson’s injury layoff — meant he was pushed to No. 3, a position he was unwilling to continue in long-term. With CSK actively pursuing him for the past three years as a successor to MS Dhoni, the move aligned with his ambitions.
Jadeja Returns to His First IPL Home — But Not as Guaranteed Captain
Ravindra Jadeja, who began his IPL journey with RR before his 2010 suspension, leaves CSK after becoming one of the franchise’s biggest icons — scoring over 2,000 runs and picking more than 140 wickets across 185 matches. His memorable last-ball heroics in the 2023 IPL final remain etched in CSK history.
As part of the trade, Jadeja’s league fee has been revised from ₹18 crore to ₹14 crore. CSK, looking to revamp their squad and adapt to a Chepauk pitch that has become less spin-friendly, believed his playing role may diminish in the coming seasons. Sources indicate Jadeja and Dhoni discussed the transition and mutually agreed the move would benefit both parties.
