In a disturbing case that underscores the persistent violence faced by women in India, a woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat has accused her husband and several others of subjecting her to months of sexual assault, physical abuse and torture. The survivor told police that the ordeal began shortly after her marriage to Danish of Khiwai village, Meerut, on October 24, 2024, and escalated when her husband allegedly “lost” her during a gambling session.
According to her statement, Danish—who she claims was addicted to alcohol and gambling—regularly assaulted her and eventually staked her in a game. When he lost, eight men allegedly raped her. She identified three of them as Umesh Gupta, Monu and Anshul from Ghaziabad. She further accused members of her husband’s family, including her brother-in-law Shahid, her sister-in-law’s husband Shaukeen and even her father-in-law Yamin, of sexually assaulting her while taunting her for “not bringing dowry.”
“I was tortured for dowry from the beginning. My husband put me on stake in gambling. Eight people raped me. My father-in-law, brother-in-law and my sister-in-law’s husband also raped me,” she stated in her complaint.
Forced Abortion, Acid Attack and Attempt to Kill
The woman also alleged that when she became pregnant, her in-laws forced her to undergo an abortion. She added that they poured acid on her feet and pushed her into a river in an attempt to kill her. She was rescued by passers-by and later returned to her parents’ home, where she revealed the months-long abuse she had endured.
The survivor claimed that the accused are now issuing threats to her father, pressuring him to withdraw the case.
FIR Registered; Police Begin Investigation
Seeking urgent intervention, the woman approached the Baghpat Superintendent of Police. Police later confirmed through a post on X that an FIR has been registered at the Binoli police station and that a probe has begun.
A Grim Reminder of Rising Crimes Against Women
The case highlights the alarming scale of gender-based violence in India. According to the NCRB 2022 report, the country recorded 4,45,256 crimes against women—a 4% rise from the previous year—averaging 51 cases every hour. Crime rates in Delhi (144.4), Haryana (118.7) and Telangana (117.6) far exceed the national average of 66.4 per lakh women.
However, actual experiences of violence remain underreported. The NFHS-5 (2019–21) survey found that 32% of ever-married women have faced physical, sexual or emotional violence from their husbands, while 6.1% reported sexual violence, revealing the deep disconnect between lived realities and recorded cases.
The investigation in the Baghpat case is ongoing.
