Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital & Research Centre Upgraded
The Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital and Research Centre, attached to Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (Mayo), has been upgraded, marking a major expansion in both healthcare capacity and medical education in Nagpur. The 615-bed facility will now offer 110 additional postgraduate seats and 41 new super-specialty seats, significantly widening advanced training opportunities for medical students.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier directed the medical education department to strengthen Nagpur’s healthcare infrastructure and introduce more postgraduate and super-specialty courses. Acting on these instructions, the state has fast-tracked the expansion.
As part of the upgradation, the Department of Medical Education and Drugs will introduce 30 new courses, including 17 postgraduate and 11 super-specialty programmes. Additional seats will also be added to accommodate the expansion. Officials said the move will significantly enhance the availability of advanced medical treatment and specialised services.
The upgraded institution has been renamed Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Institute of Superspeciality, Medical Education and Research. The decision is expected to substantially strengthen medical education facilities across the Vidarbha region in the coming years.
Dean of IGGMCH, Dr. Ravi Chavan, said that the process of creating new posts for the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Institute of Superspeciality, Medical Education, and Research will begin immediately. A committee led by the Chief Secretary has also instructed that all recruitment and construction work under the upgradation project be completed within the given deadlines. The construction responsibilities have been assigned to the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA).
₹1,165.65 Crore Sanctioned
The state government has approved a total expenditure of ₹1,165.65 crore for the project. The funding will be shared between the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department and the Medical Education and Drugs Department in a 75:25 ratio.
The upgradation is expected to improve patient care while transforming IGGMCH into a stronger centre for advanced medical training in Vidarbha.
17 Postgraduate Subjects Included
The list of postgraduate courses to be introduced spans 17 key medical disciplines. These include General Medicine, Paediatrics, Dermatology and Venereology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Laboratory Medicine, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Anaesthesiology, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Emergency Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. These additions are expected to greatly strengthen specialist training capacity at the institute.
