India welcomed a new era in its judiciary on Monday as Justice Surya Kant assumed office as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, following the retirement of Justice BR Gavai on Sunday.
During his tenure in the Supreme Court, Justice Kant has been part of several landmark constitutional rulings, including those concerning the abrogation of Article 370, the revision of Bihar’s electoral rolls, and the Pegasus spyware case.
Profile of Justice Surya Kant
Born on February 10, 1962, in Haryana’s Hisar district to a middle-class family, Justice Kant’s rise reflects a journey from practising as a small-town lawyer to occupying the highest judicial office in the country. He completed his Master’s degree in Law from Kurukshetra University in 2011, graduating with “first class first,” as recorded.
Justice Kant earlier served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from October 5, 2018, and before that, delivered several notable judgments during his tenure at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
He will serve as Chief Justice for 15 months, demitting office on February 9, 2027, upon turning 65. Among his key interventions, Justice Kant had called on the Election Commission to furnish details of the 65 lakh voters excluded from Bihar’s draft electoral rolls while hearing petitions challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters list in the state.
