Several taxpayers are still awaiting their income tax refunds for FY 2024–25 (AY 2025–26), despite having filed their returns months ago. The ITR filing deadline this year was September 16, and while many refunds have been processed, a significant number of taxpayers are facing delays.
Why Refunds Are Delayed
CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal on Monday said the Income Tax Department is scrutinising cases involving “wrongful deductions” and certain refund claims flagged by the system. He said high-value or red-flagged refunds are undergoing additional checks.
“Low-value refunds are being released. We found that some wrong refunds or deductions were being claimed. So this is a continuous process,” Agrawal said.
He added that the perceived dip in refund volumes was likely because TDS rates had been rationalised, reducing the number of refund claims. As per official data, refunds fell 18% to ₹2.42 lakh crore between April 1 and November 10.
The department has also advised taxpayers to file revised returns if they missed reporting anything. Agrawal noted that appellate authorities are working “overtime” to clear pendency accumulated during the pandemic years.
When Will Refunds Be Issued?
The CBDT chief said taxpayers can expect the pending refunds to be credited by next month. “We hope to release the remaining refunds by this month or by December,” he said.
Routine, low-value returns with no discrepancies continue to be processed quickly.
