The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $400 million loan under a results-based lending program aimed at strengthening road connectivity across Maharashtra.
According to the bank, the funding will support upgrades in 34 districts, with a strong focus on the climate-vulnerable and economically backward Marathwada and Vidarbha regions. The project is expected to improve access for rural communities to markets, logistics hubs, healthcare, education, and other essential services.
ADB stated that more than 1.7 million people living within walking distance of the upgraded roads will benefit, including residents of at least 80 villages and around 410 rural communities.
Highlighting the program’s broader significance, ADB Country Director for India Mio Oka said, “The program seeks to foster balanced and inclusive economic growth in Maharashtra by improving road connectivity to rural villages, post-harvest centers, and essential social services.”
The bank noted that the results-based lending modality will allow implementing agencies to pool resources and work toward shared results, ensuring coordinated development assistance and unified targets.
