A senior Head of Department (HOD) at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (Mayo) has been booked for allegedly sexually harassing and mentally torturing a woman doctor over several months. After the survivor filed a detailed complaint, Tehsil Police registered a case, leading to unrest among resident doctors on campus.
The accused, Dr. Makarand Suryakant Vyavahare (56), allegedly harassed the doctor between February 3 and November 19, 2025. According to the complaint, he repeatedly behaved inappropriately—asking her to dress in a “special manner,” calling her to his cabin frequently, making her sit very close, and speaking in a low, intimidating tone.
The complaint also states that he insulted her in front of others if she didn’t follow his instructions and threatened to terminate her job. The survivor said she often broke down due to the pressure, but he dismissed her distress.
In one incident, he allegedly demanded she file a false complaint against an associate professor in exchange for approving her leave. She also alleged that he touched her inappropriately during a post-mortem examination in the presence of other doctors.
After sharing her ordeal with colleagues, they encouraged her to report the matter. She then submitted a written complaint to Mayo Hospital Dean Dr. Ravi Chavan. The revelations sparked tension and anger among resident doctors.
Following a preliminary inquiry, Tehsil Police registered a case against Dr. Vyavahare under sections related to harassment and criminal intimidation. Further investigation is ongoing, and the hospital has not yet issued an official statement.
