A new step toward safer and more informed highway travel is taking shape as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) partners with Reliance Jio to launch a telecom-based alert system across the national highway network. Leveraging Jio’s 4G and 5G connectivity, the system will deliver real-time warnings to commuters, helping reduce preventable accidents and ensuring smoother journeys.
Advance Alerts for Risk Zones
Under this initiative, highway users will receive early warnings on their mobile devices when approaching accident-prone areas, fog-heavy stretches, zones with stray animals, or sudden diversions. Alerts will be sent via SMS, WhatsApp, and priority calls, giving travelers ample time to adjust their speed and driving behavior before reaching potentially hazardous locations.
Integrated With NHAI’s Digital Platforms
The project will roll out in phases and integrate with NHAI’s digital ecosystem, including the Rajmargyatra app and the 1033 emergency helpline. This integration aims to create a responsive system where commuters can access accurate information seamlessly.
No Additional Roadside Infrastructure Needed
The automated system relies on existing telecom towers, enabling rapid deployment across regions. Available to all Jio users traveling on or near national highways, the initiative leverages Jio’s network strength and over 500 million subscribers, covering a significant portion of India’s highway traffic.
Leadership Voices Support
According to NHAI Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav, “This initiative marks an important step forward in providing timely and reliable information to commuters, enabling them to make informed decisions and adopt safer driving practices well in advance.” Reliance Jio President Jyotindra Thacker highlighted that the system uses the telecom network’s wide coverage to deliver high-impact safety communication at scale.
Pilot Rollout and Future Expansion
The first phase will be tested in select NHAI regional offices to refine risk-zone mapping and alert triggers. The project will comply with all regulatory and data protection standards. NHAI also plans to collaborate with other telecom providers to extend these benefits to a broader user base, advancing the long-term goal of safer and smarter highway travel.
