Nagpur: Police in Lakadganj have busted an illegal trade racket involving the sale of counterfeit JSW steel sheets being passed off as genuine products. The action followed a complaint filed by JSW’s authorised team, alleging open sale of fake sheets under the company’s brand name.
Acting on the complaint, a police team led by Inspector Shirsagar from Lakadganj Police Station raided a unit operating as Prime Ispat. During the operation, officers seized a consignment of steel sheets falsely labelled as JSW products and allegedly supplied to buyers as original material.
Owner of Prime Ispat Held
Police have identified the accused as Kamal Jain (53), the operator of Prime Ispat. He has been arrested on charges of manufacturing and selling counterfeit steel under a reputed brand name.
A case has been registered under FIR No. 1005/2025, invoking the following legal provisions:
• Section 51(B)(i) and 63(A) of the Copyright Act, 1957
• Section 318 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
Officials said the illegal use of JSW’s identity amounts to serious intellectual property violations and can also endanger structural safety if such material is used in construction projects.
Police Launch Wider Probe
Investigators are now probing the network behind the counterfeit distribution, including sourcing channels, possible manufacturing points and links with local traders. JSW’s legal representatives are coordinating with the police to ensure action against all individuals involved in brand infringement.
Authorities have advised dealers and consumers to purchase only from authorised suppliers and verify material authenticity before use.
