The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave warning for several districts in Maharashtra until Saturday, December 13. A yellow alert is in place for Jalgaon, Pune, Solapur, Nashik, Jalna and Nagpur, while Mumbai remains without any alert. For December 12, yellow alerts have also been issued for Nashik, Solapur, Pune, Parbhani, Jalna and nearby areas.
On Thursday, maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 33°C, with minimum temperatures likely to dip to about 16°C. According to the Mumbai Regional Met Centre, isolated pockets of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are very likely to experience cold wave conditions. A yellow alert has been declared for these areas from December 11 to 13.
The latest weather bulletin notes that maximum temperatures across Maharashtra will remain largely unchanged over the next 4–5 days. However, minimum temperatures are expected to fall gradually by 2–3°C over the next three days, before rising again.
Cold wave in other parts of India
In addition to Maharashtra, IMD has issued cold wave warnings for Telangana, North Interior Karnataka and North Interior Odisha. Dense fog is also expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram from December 11–15, and in Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana from December 13–15.
IMD further stated that during the winter season (December 2025 – February 2026), parts of central India along with regions in northwest and northeast India may see above-normal cold wave days.
Harshest winter in Maharashtra in five years
This year marks Maharashtra’s most severe winter since 2020, according to earlier reports from HT. From November to December 9, the state recorded five cold wave days—significantly higher than recent years, which saw either none or only short spells. Experts attribute this to dry northerly winds sweeping across the state. With very low humidity and clear skies, rapid nighttime radiation cooling is intensifying the chill.
