Nagpur: Stepping up enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation elections, Bajaj Nagar police carried out a major seizure of illicit liquor and a vehicle, collectively valued at over ?19 lakh, and booked two persons in the case.
The action was taken on the night of December 19, 2025, at around 8.50 pm near PVK Wine Shop on the stretch connecting Bajaj Nagar Chowk to Abhyankar Nagar Chowk. The offence was subsequently registered at Bajaj Nagar police station in the early hours of December 20.
Police said the case was registered on the complaint of police head constable Nitesh Meshram, who was on routine patrolling duty with his team as per directions of senior officers. During the patrol, a black Mahindra Thar SUV was found parked under suspicious circumstances near the wine shop. On stopping and checking the vehicle in the presence of panch witnesses, police recovered a large quantity of beer and foreign liquor allegedly being transported without any valid permit.
The seized liquor has been estimated to be worth ?1,16,290. In addition, the Mahindra Thar four-wheeler used for transportation, valued at around ?18 lakh, was also seized. The total value of the seized property has been pegged at ?19,16,290.
Police have booked Sunil Shamrao Uike (54), a resident of Pandharabodi Trust Layout Road in Nagpur, and Yogeshkumar Dattuji Meshram (34), a resident of Loni village in Deoli taluka of Wardha district. The accused allegedly acted in connivance to transport liquor illegally for sale, in violation of provisions of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Officials said a seizure panchanama was drawn on the spot and electronic evidence was collected as part of the investigation. The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior officers of Zone 1 and the Sonegaon division, with the Bajaj Nagar police team executing the action.
Police have stated that intensified checks are being conducted across the city to curb illegal liquor movement and prevent any attempt to influence voters during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the civic polls. Further investigation is in progress.
