The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scored a resounding victory in the first-ever election of the Kondhali Nagar Panchayat, delivering a major setback to the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction). BJP candidate Yogesh Sheshrao Chafle was elected Chairman with a clear margin of 1,713 votes, firmly establishing the party’s dominance in the newly formed civic body.
Chafle secured 4,416 votes, while his nearest rival Sheetal Sanjay Raut of the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) polled 2,703 votes. The Congress candidate finished a distant third with 932 votes, while Independent candidates Sagar Pralhad Balpande (126 votes) and Sunil Keshavrao Makode (108 votes) trailed behind. NOTA received 48 votes.
In the 17-member Kondhali Nagar Panchayat, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with nine seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark. The NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) won four seats, the Congress secured two, and two Independents were elected, confirming BJP’s firm grip over the civic body.
Among the BJP’s winning councillors are Vishal Sawarkar, Munna Singh Shengar, Sushma Khodankar, Hemlata Paliwal, Priya Paithe, Sonal Chafle, Kavita Jhade, Kamal Irapachi and Gaurav Irkhede. The election also threw up interesting twists, including victories by BJP rebels and defeats within the winning camp.
With BJP now firmly in control, expectations are high for stable governance and faster development in Kondhali’s first Nagar Panchayat term.
