The Maharashtra government has decided to review and regulate school names to prevent misleading or misrepresentative terminology. According to a circular issued by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, school names vary widely, with some institutions affiliated with the State Board, ICSE, or CBSE using terms that could confuse parents, students, and the public.
The circular stated that existing schools with such names will also be reviewed. Schools cannot use terms like “global” unless they have branches in two or more countries. Similarly, institutions not affiliated with Cambridge International Education or the International Baccalaureate (IB) should not use the word “international.”
For future proposals seeking school recognition, authorities will closely examine the school’s name, board affiliation, medium of instruction, and whether the institution operates other schools nationally or internationally. If a name is deemed misleading, the school will be required to change it before the proposal is submitted to the state authorities.
This move comes after authorities observed that several institutions were using terms such as “international,” “global,” and even “CBSE” in their names without meeting the necessary criteria.
