The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the kidney racket case has arrested a fake doctor from Solapur.
The accused, identified as Krishna, was once a victim of the racket but later turned into an agent, police said. He allegedly took 10–12 people from Maharashtra to a kidney hospital in Cambodia on a commission basis, informed SP Sudarshan Mummaka on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media in Chandrapur, SP Mummaka said the SIT traced Krishna through a mobile number used in the crime and arrested him from Solapur.
The case came to light after Roshan Kude, a young farmer from Minthur village in Nagbhid tehsil, complained that he had sold his kidney in Cambodia to repay loans taken from moneylenders. Kude had borrowed Rs 1 lakh, but due to exorbitant interest rates, the amount reportedly ballooned to Rs 74 lakh. Despite selling his belongings, he failed to clear the debt.
In desperation, Kude decided to sell his kidney after contacting a “Kidney Donor Community” page, through which he came in touch with Krishna, who posed as a doctor. On Krishna’s advice, Kude travelled to Kolkata and then to Cambodia for the procedure.
Following Kude’s complaint, police booked six moneylenders, of whom five have been arrested, while one is absconding. Given the seriousness of the offence, an SIT was formed to investigate the case in depth.
Further investigation revealed that Krishna was using a fake name and that his real name is Mallesh. He is an engineer, not a doctor. Police said Mallesh himself had sold his kidney in 2018 due to financial hardship and later became an agent in the kidney racket, earning around Rs 1 lakh as commission per case.
Police are now investigating how many people were duped by him into selling their kidneys, SP Mummaka added.
