India has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela following a US military operation in the country.
According to a media report, the advisory comes after the United States carried out multiple strikes and announced the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife during an early-morning operation on Saturday.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) cited the volatile security situation in Venezuela, where explosions and low-flying aircraft were reported near key locations, including La Carlota airport, in the aftermath of the US-led action. Indian nationals have been advised to postpone travel unless absolutely necessary.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said American forces had detained President Maduro and his wife after weeks of escalating pressure from Washington.
Speaking to the media, Trump asserted that the United States would play a central role in determining Venezuela’s future administration. He said Washington intended to oversee the country’s governance for a transitional period.
Addressing reporters after confirmation of the operation, Trump described the raid as an unprecedented display of American military power and claimed that Venezuelan military capabilities had been neutralised.
He added that no other nation could have executed an operation of similar scale or speed.
The MEA has also asked Indians currently in Venezuela to remain vigilant and stay in close contact with the Indian mission in Caracas.
Citizens have been provided with a dedicated email address and emergency phone number for assistance, as authorities continue to monitor developments following the US military action.
