The Indian National Congress on Tuesday released its manifesto for the 2026 Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections, promising a wide range of welfare measures aimed at easing the daily burden on citizens. The manifesto focuses on civic amenities, social justice and economic relief, and outlines over 17 major public welfare schemes.
Key promises include round-the-clock water supply with up to 30,000 litres free per household per month, complete waiver of property tax for homes up to 500 sq ft, and free city bus travel for women, students, senior citizens, freedom fighters and ex-servicemen.
The manifesto presents a 20-point roadmap to transform Nagpur into a “Clean, Safe and Smart City.” It sharply criticises the BJP’s 19-year rule in the NMC, accusing it of administrative failure, corruption and deterioration of civic services. As an alternative, Congress has pledged citizen-centric governance and improved basic services.
The manifesto was formally released in Marathi and Hindi at a function held at Mahakalkar Hall in the presence of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Harshwardhan Sapkal and several senior party leaders. The event was attended by 151 Congress candidates, who were addressed by party leaders during the programme.
Reiterating its “Mission 100 Congress Corporators,” the party expressed confidence in securing a decisive mandate to ensure holistic development of Nagpur.
Among other major assurances are twice-daily door-to-door garbage collection, ownership rights for slum dwellers, freehold rights for leased plots, traffic decongestion through intelligent traffic management, pothole-free roads, permanent solutions to flooding, improved sewage management, and better public healthcare. The manifesto also promises 151 English-medium schools with free education, creation of hawker zones, playgrounds, gardens, markets, community halls, and large-scale infrastructure development.
Beyond civic services, Congress has proposed free Wi-Fi at major public places, beautification of rivers and lakes, development of new malls and markets, improved public transport, environmental conservation, and faster execution of key projects such as MIHAN, SEZs and airport expansion.
The party has positioned the manifesto as a relief-driven and inclusive vision for urban development, seeking to project itself as a strong alternative to the ruling BJP ahead of the NMC elections.
