The Maharashtra government has declared a public holiday on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in select districts to ensure higher voter turnout during the municipal corporation elections, including the much-awaited BMC Elections 2026. The announcement was confirmed by the State Election Commission (SEC), which will conduct polling in 29 municipal corporations across the state.
The holiday will apply to state and semi-government offices, educational institutions, and local civic bodies in areas where polling will take place. Private companies have been directed to grant a paid holiday or sufficient time off to employees to allow them to vote, as per the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act.
Focus on BMC Elections 2026
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are among the most significant civic polls, as the body has been under administrator rule since early 2022. With a budget of over ₹74,000 crore, the BMC is India’s richest municipal corporation, making the 2026 elections politically crucial. Other major cities voting include Pune, Thane, and Nagpur.
Political Stakes High
The civic elections are being closely watched as a key test for the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Changing political alliances and internal splits have intensified the contest, particularly in Mumbai ahead of the BMC polls.
Poll Schedule
According to State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare,
- Polling Day: January 15, 2026 (7:30 am to 5:30 pm)
- Vote Counting: January 16, 2026
- Voter List: Based on the electoral roll as of July 1, 2025
The SEC clarified that wards with only one candidate will not have polling, and such candidates will be declared elected unopposed. While some activists have demanded a NOTA option, the commission said current laws do not provide for it.
Voters are advised to check their names on the electoral rolls through the SEC’s official website or mobile app before polling day.
With a public holiday in place and high political stakes, Maharashtra is preparing for a crucial round of civic elections that could shape urban governance across the state.
