Indian Railways has announced the fare structure and reservation rules for the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, signalling a major shift in overnight long-distance train travel.
Unlike the existing Vande Bharat chair-car services operating on short and medium routes, the sleeper version is meant for journeys of several hundred kilometres and is positioned as a premium service. Along with higher fares, Indian Railways has introduced a key change by doing away with long-standing booking options such as reservation against cancellation (RAC) and waiting lists.
As per the notified norms, the Vande Bharat Sleeper will have a minimum chargeable distance of 400 km, even if the actual journey is shorter. Base fares, excluding GST, have been fixed at ?2.4 per km for AC 3-Tier, ?3.1 per km for AC 2-Tier and ?3.8 per km for AC First Class. This results in minimum fares of ?960, ?1,240 and ?1,520 respectively for travel up to 400 km, with GST charged extra.
Ticket prices will increase with distance and, on longer routes, are expected to be higher than those of Rajdhani Express trains, highlighting the premium positioning of the service.
A major departure from existing practices is the reservation policy. Tickets will be sold only as fully confirmed berths, with no provision for RAC or waiting lists. All berths will be released on the first day of the Advance Reservation Period, with limited quotas applicable for senior citizens, women passengers, persons with disabilities and duty pass holders.
In a circular dated January 9, 2026, the Railway Board said that only fully reimbursable passes, warrants or similar instruments will be accepted for bookings on the Vande Bharat Sleeper. Concessional tickets and non-reimbursable complimentary passes will not be allowed.
The railways have also emphasised digital payments, noting that refunds can be initiated within 24 hours of cancellation if payments are made digitally. Even at booking counters, passengers will be encouraged to pay digitally, though refunds for others will follow standard procedures.
Lower berths will be allotted to eligible passengers, subject to availability, including senior citizens, women above the prescribed age and passengers travelling with children who do not require a separate berth.
In terms of design and operations, the Vande Bharat Sleeper will be fully air-conditioned and will offer AC First Class, AC 2-Tier and AC 3-Tier accommodation. The trainsets are designed for speeds of up to 180 kmph, though operational speeds of around 130 kmph are expected on existing tracks. Passenger amenities include automatic sliding doors, modern toilets, improved suspension, individual reading lights and charging points, along with enhanced safety features such as surveillance systems and collision-avoidance technology.
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper service is planned between Howrah and Kamakhya near Guwahati, covering nearly 1,000 km. This overnight corridor is expected to see reduced travel time once the service begins.
Indian Railways plans to introduce more Vande Bharat Sleeper trains on other long-distance routes in phases, depending on manufacturing timelines and operational readiness.
Unlike conventional overnight trains that rely on RAC and waiting lists to maximise occupancy, the Vande Bharat Sleeper treats each berth as fixed premium inventory, focusing on speed, comfort and certainty rather than replacing existing services.
