After securing a record fourth consecutive win in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now focused on the next crucial step — the reservation of the mayoral post. The Urban Development Department is scheduled to hold a reservation draw on Thursday, January 22, which will decide whether the mayor’s position will be open or reserved for a specific category, a decision likely to influence the city’s political landscape.
The reservation draw will be conducted for mayoral posts across 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. In Nagpur, the outcome is expected to determine which category corporators can stake claim to the city’s top civic office. Regardless of the reservation category, the BJP appears well-placed, with representation across all segments. The party has 23 corporators from the general category, 24 from general women, 15 from OBC women, 13 from OBC, nine from SC women, 10 from SC, five from ST women, and three from the ST category.
While the party does not face a shortage of eligible contenders, senior leaders are weighing the importance of experience. First-time corporators are generally believed to require at least a year to fully understand municipal functioning. As a result, BJP leaders are expected to deliberate carefully before backing a newcomer for the mayor’s post, given the risk of administrative challenges.
Of the 102 BJP corporators elected, only about a dozen are considered experienced and well-versed in civic administration, including municipal procedures and the responsibilities associated with the mayor’s office. Among the elected BJP corporators, 53 are women and 49 are men.
Notably, one corporator has been elected from the Shinde faction. Party sources indicate that only after the mayoral reservation category is announced will the candidates for the deputy mayor’s post be finalised. Efforts are also likely to be made to balance caste equations in these selections.
Those who miss out on the mayor or deputy mayor positions are expected to lobby for the chairmanship of the standing committee, a post that holds significant influence in municipal governance. For now, all eyes remain on the mayoral reservation, which is set to dictate the next phase of political manoeuvring within the BJP in Nagpur.
