Nagpur’s Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) is undergoing a major transformation, with several new infrastructure projects aimed at improving facilities for patients, relatives and students.
A new dharmshala for patients’ relatives has been completed and can accommodate 54 people. Initially, it will be reserved for women, with plans to expand the facility later.
Dean Dr. Ravi Chauhan said the hospital’s overall appearance and healthcare services will significantly improve with support and funding from the State Government. IGGMCH serves not only Nagpur and Vidarbha but also patients from neighbouring states such as Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Separate G+7 hostels for undergraduate and postgraduate students, each with a capacity of 400, are being constructed. An indoor stadium with facilities for badminton, yoga and a gym, along with a garden for students and visitors, is also being developed.
To address parking issues, a G+3 multi-level parking facility is being built to accommodate around 200 four-wheelers and 500 two-wheelers. The surgical complex has been modernised with advanced equipment, and a covered skywalk is being constructed to connect the Medicine Department to the surgical complex, allowing safe patient movement during rain or extreme weather.
The hospital has also added three e-ambulances and completed a new G+7 dean’s building that will house a skill laboratory, digital library, lecture halls for MBBS students and several departmental laboratories. The old casualty building will be demolished, and a new 650-seat auditorium will be built at the site of the former dean’s office. Additionally, the number of paying wards is being increased to attract more middle-class and upper-middle-class patients.
