A tense situation unfolded outside Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday evening when two undertrial prisoners allegedly escaped from a police escort vehicle and assaulted a constable who attempted to stop them. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm on February 5 near the jail’s main entrance, falling under the jurisdiction of Dhantoli Police Station.
According to the FIR filed by Police Naik Ramrao Pawar, the accused — Sahil Dhiraj Lanjewar (19) of Pachpaoli and Rushikesh alias Rushi Ganesh Mankar (21) of Kanhan — were being taken to the Central Jail for admission. As the police vehicle approached the jail gate, the duo suddenly opened the right-side door, jumped out, and fled on foot.
Police officers immediately chased the escaping prisoners. The pursuit continued behind the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Prisons Office, where a violent altercation broke out. During the scuffle, accused Sahil reportedly attacked Police Constable Suryaprakash Wavre using a wooden stick, striking his head, right knee, elbow, and palm.
Constable Wavre was rushed for medical treatment, and his injury report is awaited. Meanwhile, both accused were caught, medically examined, and subsequently lodged inside Nagpur Central Jail.
Police seized the following items from the scene:
• A broken wooden stick
• A blue ballpoint pen
• Constable Wavre’s nameplate
A case has been registered under Sections 132, 121(1), 262, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, covering charges of escaping from lawful custody, hindering government work, and assaulting a police officer.
