The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court on Wednesday expressed concern over several ongoing issues at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur, observing that the institute serves as a crucial lifeline for economically weaker patients and must be run efficiently.
Taking note of problems such as a large number of vacant posts and other operational shortcomings, the court had earlier initiated a suo motu public interest litigation. The matter was heard by a division bench of Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Raj Wakode.
During the hearing, the Central Government’s counsel, Advocate Mugdha Chandurkar, attempted to explain the status of vacant positions at the institute. However, the bench pointed out that AIIMS Nagpur was facing several other challenges as well and directed the counsel to personally visit the hospital and submit detailed information.
The court observed that while establishing AIIMS in Nagpur was a positive step, ensuring its effective functioning was equally important. It noted that merely setting up a hospital does not automatically guarantee quality public service, and if government hospitals lack adequate facilities, needy patients are often forced to seek treatment in private hospitals.
The High Court has directed AIIMS Nagpur authorities to file an affidavit within two weeks addressing the issues highlighted.
