The run-up to Valentine’s Day has triggered renewed tension in the city after Bajrang Dal issued a public advisory urging couples to avoid behaviour it considers inappropriate at religious sites and public venues. The announcement has prompted concern among youngsters planning outings during the week-long celebration of love.
The message, shared widely on social media, has drawn attention as February 14 falls on a weekend this year, with eateries, lounges and clubs preparing special attractions and themed gatherings. The development has raised apprehensions over the possibility of protests or interference at popular celebration spots.
Over the years, Valentine’s Week has frequently witnessed opposition from certain groups objecting to public displays of affection. The debate around moral policing has gained sharper traction in the digital era, with activists and civil society voices calling for tolerance and lawful conduct from all sides.
Kamal Hariyani, Co-ordinator of Bajrang Dal Nagpur, stated that the organisation does not oppose expressions of love but claims to object to obscenity and alleged substance abuse at parties. Citing a past violent episode during a Christmas gathering on Wardha Road, he alleged that such events often encourage activities detrimental to social order. “Our stand is against obscenity and wrongdoing, not against love,” he said.
As part of its campaign, the outfit has scheduled a rally on February 13 at 4 pm, commencing from Lokmat Square and culminating at Telankhedi Hanuman Mandir.
In response, city police have reinforced security arrangements. Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal informed that special squads have been constituted to conduct checks and maintain law and order during the celebrations. He asserted that any attempt to disturb peace or indulge in unlawful acts would be dealt with firmly, while advising citizens to maintain public decorum.
With parallel calls for restraint and a strengthened police presence, Valentine’s Day festivities in Nagpur are expected to proceed under heightened monitoring this year.
