South East Central Railway (SECR) has activated a modern Water Level Monitoring System on 12 major railway bridges under its Nagpur division ahead of the monsoon, aimed at ensuring safer passenger travel. The system provides round-the-clock, real-time data on water levels at bridge sites, replacing the earlier manual “meter gauge” method that required staff to physically check levels a process prone to delays and human error.
Sudden spikes in river water levels during heavy rain pose a major challenge, threatening bridge and track safety. The new sensor-based system continuously monitors river levels and is directly linked to the railway’s Track Management System. Once water crosses a pre-set danger threshold, the system automatically sends SMS alerts to railway officials’ mobile phones, enabling faster decisions, preventing potential accidents, and avoiding service disruptions.
The 12 bridges covered include those on the Kanhan-Kamathi, Mundikota-Tumsar, Wadsa-Brahmapuri, Jharsuguda-IB, IB-Brajrajnagar, Bhupdevpur-Robertson, Korba-Gevra Road, Naila-Champa, Jayramnagar-Aklatara, Dagori-Nimpania and Ramsda-Durg routes, besides the Bargi-Jhwarighat section.
SECR’s senior divisional commercial manager, Dilip Singh, said the system will help control train speeds and halt traffic when needed during flood-like conditions, making passenger journeys more secure.
