A disturbance was reported on Wednesday at Dr. Ambedkar College, Deekshabhoomi, during an ongoing Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination, following a visit by an inquiry committee from Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University. Police were called to the campus after tensions escalated outside the examination centre.
According to college authorities, the inquiry committee, led by University Senate member Dr. Nitin Kongre, arrived at the campus while Class 12 board examinations were in progress. Section 144 had been imposed within a 100-metre radius of the exam centre to ensure a disturbance-free environment.
Simultaneously, members of a women’s organization gathered at the college entrance and raised slogans, creating a commotion that reportedly caused anxiety among students appearing for the examination. The college administration stated that it had informed the university in advance that board exams were underway and that the matter under inquiry is currently pending before the High Court in Writ Petition No. 1267/2026.
“We had communicated to the university that examinations were in progress and that the issue is sub judice. Despite this, the committee proceeded with the visit,” a senior college official said. The administration further alleged that despite being informed of the legal status of the matter, the committee continued its inspection and visited various departments without prior permission.
College authorities claimed that external individuals created a ruckus during the visit and that some members of the women’s organization allegedly used inappropriate language toward staff. As the situation intensified, the principal contacted the police helpline (112) to prevent further disruption and ensure student safety. Police personnel arrived shortly thereafter, dispersed the crowd, and secured the examination centre.
The college maintains that it has an internal complaint resolution mechanism for faculty and students, and that grievances can be escalated to the university’s grievance cell if required. Officials also stated that no formal complaints had been received from the university prior to the constitution of the inquiry committee.
The committee was reportedly formed following complaints by Dr. Archana Meshram. However, the college has questioned the impartiality of the panel before the High Court, citing that Dr. Kongre—who had raised the issue in the University Senate—was appointed as its chairman. Despite the matter being under judicial consideration, the committee proceeded to interact with faculty members and departmental representatives during the visit.
The administration also dismissed rumours that staff members had been granted leave in anticipation of the committee’s arrival, asserting that all employees were present on duty.
No injuries were reported, and examinations continued under police supervision.
