In a disturbing incident, larvae, caterpillars and other foreign objects were allegedly discovered in food served at the mess of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur, triggering serious concerns about hygiene and student health on campus.
The issue surfaced during Wednesday’s lunch at the graduate students’ mess. According to students, a caterpillar fried in oil was found in the vegetables served on a plate, while a dead worm was noticed on a piece of fruit. In another case, a sponge-like substance was allegedly found in the mushroom curry instead of mushrooms. Several students reportedly stopped eating midway after spotting the contamination.
Students also pointed to inadequate mess infrastructure in proportion to the growing number of students. With only two dining tables available, they claimed that barely 70 students can be accommodated at a time.
In addition to space constraints, complaints regarding food quality have also been raised. Photos and videos of the alleged contamination have circulated widely in students’ WhatsApp groups.
Administration Assures Inquiry
Dean (Student Welfare) Dr. Siddharth Dubhashi stated that the mess contract was handed over to a new contractor from February 1 and that operations are being conducted as per prescribed guidelines.
“We closely monitor the mess operations. Cleanliness is given special attention, and both the kitchen and dining areas are thoroughly cleaned, particularly at night. The head of the department also dines with students. Prima facie, the presence of insects appears to be mischief. No formal complaint has been received so far,” he said.
