Scientists at CSIR-NEERI in Nagpur have developed an artificial intelligence-based dashboard that can track vehicular emissions in real time using live traffic footage. The system analyses CCTV feeds to identify different types of vehicles and estimate the pollution they generate.
Using the data, the dashboard calculates emissions such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Officials say the technology can help authorities detect pollution hotspots and manage traffic congestion more effectively.
The AI model has been trained with traffic data from several Indian cities and is currently being tested through a pilot camera installed near Ajni Square in Nagpur.
Researchers are working with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and traffic police to expand the system across the city. The dashboard is currently meant for internal use and will be made publicly accessible after further development.
